Nelson Street Regeneration
The upper section of Nelson Street is the first part of the town centre to be regenerated. Nelson Street was chosen as a prototype area in which to test the concept designs, materials and working practices. In addition to the fact that Nelson Street forms an important pedestrian link between Shaw's Brow Car Park and the town centre it was also chosen so that any minor changes to the design or materials could be introduced easily before the main project commences in Strand Street.
The design uses high quality granite paving in both slabs and setts. The seats are also carved from granite and have been designed to incorporate motifs inspired by the work of Manx designer and artist Archibald Knox.
Work will continue in Wellington Street and the lower section of Nelson Street early in 2012. The following stages will involve the regeneration of the northern sectin of Duke Street and Regent Street. This will be followed by Strand Street, Howard Street and Granville Street in 2013.
